They give\n29\tyou no way to know *why* something keeps restarting — just that it does.\n30\t\n31\tThese are the specific problems that led to building this, in roughly the order they were\n32\tencountered:\n33\t\n34\t---\n35\t\n36\t### 🔴 Memory Leaks Accumulating Silently\n37\t\n38\tEmby's transcode session handling occasionally leaks memory — a session ends but its\n39\tmemory allocation doesn't fully release. SABnzbd's Python process slowly expands over\n40\tdays as it processes downloads. Without hard memory limits and automatic enforcement,\n41\tthese don't fail dramatically — they just consume more and more RAM until the system\n42\tstarts swapping and everything slows to a crawl. By then, nothing in the Docker logs\n43\ttells you why the system feels slow. `docker stats` shows a container at 22GB and\n44\tclimbing, but Docker itself does nothing about it.\n45\t\n46\tThe fix: hard per-container memory ceilings in `WATCHDOG_CONTAINERS`. When a container\n47\texceeds its limit the watchdog restarts it immediately — no strikes, no waiting. A\n48\tmemory leak is not a transient spike. Immediate action is correct.\n49\t\n50\t---\n51\t\n52\t### 🔴 Containers That Look Running But Aren't Responding\n53\t\n54\tDocker reports a container as `Up 14 days` while its application layer has been silently\n55\tfrozen for hours. The reverse proxy happily forwards traffic to a service that returns\n56\tnothing. Users see a broken page. Docker sees a healthy container. The container process\n57\tis technically running — it just isn't doing anything.\n58\t\n59\tDocker's built-in health checks require a `HEALTHCHECK` instruction in the image itself,\n60\twhich most self-hosted images don't have. Even those that do often check something too\n61\tshallow — a process exists, not whether it's actually serving requests.\n62\t\n63\tThe fix: HTTP health checks on the actual service port. `curl` to the real endpoint on\n64\tevery watchdog cycle. If the service doesn't respond within `CURL_TIMEOUT` seconds, that's\n65\ta strike. Two consecutive failures trigger a restart. The distinction between \"process\n66\trunning\" and \"service responding\" is the distinction that matters.\n67\t\n68\t---\n69\t\n70\t### 🔴 Dependency Failures on Restart\n71\t\n72\tAuthelia connects to MariaDB at startup. If both are down simultaneously — say, after a\n73\tpower cut — and the watchdog restarts Authelia first, Authelia fails to connect, exits\n74\timmediately, and goes into a crash loop. Meanwhile MariaDB is coming up fine in the\n75\tbackground. The watchdog sees Authelia crash three times, adds it to the skip list,\n76\tand sends a critical notification. Authelia was never broken. It just came up in the\n77\twrong order, failed at startup, and got punished for it.\n78\t\n79\tThe fix: dependency ordering. If a container's dependency is also down, the dependent is\n80\tskipped entirely this cycle. The dependency is restarted first. On the next cycle — once\n81\tMariaDB is actually accepting connections — Authelia is restarted and comes up cleanly.\n82\tThe skip list is never involved. No false alarms. No manual recovery needed.\n83\t\n84\t---\n85\t\n86\t### 🔴 Restart Loops Corrupting State\n87\t\n88\tSome containers corrupt their internal state if restarted repeatedly in rapid succession.\n89\tSQLite databases that don't get a clean shutdown write incomplete transactions. Partially\n90\tapplied database migrations leave schema in an inconsistent state. A container that\n91\tcrashes on startup after a bad migration gets restarted immediately, crashes again,\n92\tgets restarted again — each restart has a chance of making the database worse, not better.\n93\t\n94\tA naive watchdog that just keeps hammering a crashed container is actively harmful in\n95\tthis scenario. More restarts mean more corruption risk. The right response when restarts\n96\taren't working is to stop restarting and alert the operator.\n97\t\n98\tThe fix: restart loop protection. After `WATCHDOG_CONTAINER_RESTART_LIMIT` restarts\n99\twithin a rolling `WATCHDOG_CONTAINER_RESTART_WINDOW` hour window, the container goes\n100\ton the skip list. A critical notification goes out. The watchdog stops touching it.\n101\tThe operator investigates and clears the skip list once the underlying problem is fixed.\n102\t\n103\t---\n104\t\n105\t### 🔴 Slow Degradation That Never Becomes a Failure\n106\t\n107\tNginxProxyManager accumulates stale entries in its connection table over weeks of uptime.\n108\tDispatcharr's Live TV scheduler builds up internal scheduling state that makes decisions\n109\tprogressively slower after months of continuous operation. These containers never crash.\n110\tThey never throw errors. They just get progressively worse in ways that are hard to\n111\tattribute to anything specific — until someone notices that the proxy feels slower than\n112\tit used to, or that Live TV channel changes take longer than they should.\n113\t\n114\tThe fix: scheduled restarts. Not because something is broken, but because some containers\n115\tsimply perform better with a clean start. Daily at 1am for connection-heavy services.\n116\tWeekly for less-critical services that run fine for weeks but benefit from a clean slate.\n117\tZero user impact — happens while everyone is asleep.\n118\t\n119\t---\n120\t\n121\t### 🔴 Network Configuration Lost After Updates\n122\t\n123\tunRAID occasionally wipes custom Docker networks after updates — particularly networks\n124\tcreated by Docker Compose stacks or the NextCloud AIO container. Any container that\n125\tdepended on those networks for internal communication suddenly can't reach its peers.\n126\tmemcached can't talk to NextCloud. CrowdSec can't talk to NginxProxyManager. Services\n127\tappear to be up but silently fail to communicate with each other.\n128\t\n129\tThe fix: network recreation at every array start. `docker_network_connect.sh` checks\n130\tevery configured network on startup, creates any that are missing, and connects all\n131\tconfigured containers to them. Idempotent — if everything is already correct, it does\n132\tnothing and produces no output. If a network had to be created, it notifies — that only\n133\thappens after an update, and you want to know when it does.\n134\t\n135\t---\n136\t\n137\t### 🔴 No Visibility Into What the Watchdog Already Tried\n138\t\n139\tA container keeps appearing in a broken state. You SSH in and see it's stopped. You\n140\tdon't know if the watchdog tried to restart it and failed, gave up and skip-listed it,\n141\tis mid-attempt right now, or hasn't noticed yet. One command to see exactly what's\n146\ton the skip list, which containers are stopped vs running, how many restarts were attempted,\n147\tand what the watchdog's current state is. One command to clear a specific container and\n148\tits history after you've fixed the problem.
